Whiile looking at the results of the last few events, some of you probably noticed a new W 20 AIRE-runner with a not very British name and wondered where she had appeared from. But I also would like to introduce myself to AIRE-members who haven't come across my name or met me yet. My name is Noemi Cerny, I come from the northern, Swiss-German speaking part of Switzerland. I'm 19 years old and having finished college last June I decided to take a year out before University. I've been very keen on orienteering since I was 12 and am currently a member of the Swiss Junior Squad. During the winter there aren't any orienteering events in Switzerland, so I chose this time to come here to improve my English. I'm living with the Stevens family in Ilkley and have enjoyed my stay here very much so far. I've been quite fortunate in choosing this period as there are so many opportunities to orienteer here in the winter which I wasn't aware of before I came. My club in Switzerland has just over 200 members and is one of the biggest and most successful orienteering clubs. This is very few compared with most English clubs, however there are fewer people living in Switzerland than in London. The club is quite active with a training run on Tuesdays and on Wednesdays there are technical trainings in the summer and circuits during the winter. We usually meet at a school or another public building for an orienteering event and walk to the forest to get to the start. Most of the events are well accessible by public transport but many people travel by car as well. After using the school showers we meet to socialize and have sandwiches, drinks and cakes which the organizing club sells. You are all very welcome to ask me anything you wonder about (eg orienteering in Switzerland) when you meet me at an orienteering event.
Have a happy new year and thank you for making my stay so enjoyable!
Noemi Cerny
(Thanks Noemi. We hope that you continue to enjoy your stay and to run well ! Eds)
