The Club Weekend by Laura King
It was a Friday night- I was tired out. School all week, then a swimming lesson and home for tea. All I wanted was to go to bed. But Mum, who were even more tired than me, said 'pyjamas on and get into the car'. I thought it was just one of her slips of the tongue and I started climbing the stairs. Dad yelled 'Laura into the car-now!' 'But why Dad?' 'We are going to the Lake District, youth hostel, club weekend, it will be lots of fun' he said with a yawn.
After some Mum and Dad had thrown everything into the boot and thrown a few more commands at Gemma and I we set off. Mum couldn't read us stories as she was driving and Dad went to sleep so on the way we listened to a tape of Raymond Briggs 'The Bear'. I liked the bit where the bear did a poo on the stairs best!
Gemma and I woke up in the middle of the night when we arrived at the hotel. 'hostel' Mum reminded me 'don't build your hopes up too high!' We slept in a small room with two bunks Gemma and I were allowed to sleep on the top bunks!
On Saturday morning I played with Scott and we met Elizabeth, Jessica and Sam too. Everyone decided to do different things on Saturday. Mum, Dad, Gemma and I went for a walk north through the woods to Tilberthwaite Ghyll. It was quite windy there. We scrambled on some rocks and had lunch on a boulder in the middle of the stream. The water was very noisy but we were lucky to see a red squirrel scampering up a tree. The climb down from the hill to the hostel was exciting. Dad and I did some scree-running! Mum was a bit alarmed.
When we got back Mum made us hot chocolate and we had Jaffa cake rolls-yummy! All our friends were back too and we persuaded our Dads to find lots of 20p pieces and we had hours of fun playing table football in the games room. I was almost too tired to eat my tea by 7pm.
On Sunday we went to Stickle Pike for the orienteering event. Gemma and I clambered around the jungly string course with Dad. Then we walked to the finish to meet Mum. We were pleased to see her arrive on time for a change. At the last event she was so late that Dad missed his run! We all climbed up to the start and Gemma and I did the white course. Gemma started two minutes in front of us and managed to orienteer around the whole course by herself. Next time she will remember to dib every control! I was slower than Gemma because I stopped to splash in all the mud and streams.
As we had used up all our energy by this time Mum bought us Chocolate brownies at Wilfs and then we played in the woods with Beth, Joe and Scott before falling asleep on the way home.
Dad says if we save up our pennies we can go on the club weekend next year-hooray!
