Calverley Woods 4/1/04 My first solo orienteering event!
On the 4th of January it was the first time I went Orienteering by myself. It was my 8th birthday that day. At the Orienteering me and Naomi helped at Aireport before we did our courses. I walked up to the Start with Naomi and Daddy. On the way to the start we discussed about the Orienteering I was going to do. I felt excited but a little bit nervous. When we got to the start, Gemma started about 3 or 4 mins before me. I felt pleased at what I done and on the way from the start to number 4, I seemed quite OK. Then I forgot to look at my compass and went the wrong way. I then knew that I had gone wrong, but then I saw a lady walking with a little girl. I asked where I was and the lady replied we are up here and it was for me I was in the wrong place…
The kind lady said I had to go down a hill and get to the bottom. When I got to the bottom I saw Gemma jogging to number 5. There, at one side there was a control and it was number 5. Me and Gemma had a race to number 6, but of-course boys beat girls at running some times. I won the race to number 6. I raced to number 7 and felt pleased with myself, then I saw Naomi and Daddy at a gate straight in front of me. I dibbed number 7 and struggled up a little hill to number 8 and the finish. Then I went across a main path to do the string course. My time was 15 58 and I came 4th in the results. My dad says to always look at my compass. Daniel Calvert
