Another AGM comes and goes...another AGM that Martyn doesn't manage ! And it's also time to turn our thoughts to the year ahead. Probably our most significant task this year is to find someone (or two) to take over from us next October. Does anyone feel like volunteering now ? Please !?! Seriously though, if you have an interest, now would be a good time to say so and get a taste of what's involved. The requirements (we think) are to be pretty relaxed and let others in the club do their thing. Orienteers are a talented and committed bunch and the Chair's job seems to be to marshal their efforts and say thankyou a lot.
Having just got our biannual major event out of the way, we are back into the regular round of colour coded and badge events over the winter. Please join in to help and if you're free to do one of the major jobs for a forthcoming event, please contact Ian Marshall and volunteer. Further in the distance is JK 2006, to be hosted in Yorkshire. The hunt for areas is underway and there will be lots of other work as well. Do keep Easter 2006 clear in your diary as Aire will be playing a major part in organising Britain's premier Orienteering event.
The club weekend may well have happened by the time you read this. Thanks very much to Margaret and Alan Parker for making the weekend happen again this year. It really is appreciated by lots of club members and envied by many other clubs.
...and now we have to remove 150 tiles from the kitchen wall which we stuck on earlier. They're not level ! Oh the trials of a new house….
Chairman's Review of the year 2002 - 2003
At October's AGM Lisa Broadest presented the following review ..
Another year seems to have flown by and the club can again look back on a very successful 12 months in both competition and events. The recent Dales Weekend has been the culmination of many years' work by some club members. The weekend itself was blessed by glorious weather, but was made by the sterling efforts of so many club members who gave up their time before, during and after the weekend to help ensure it was a success. In our time as Chair, I don't think we've seen quite such a high proportion of club members get involved at an event. It was a good thing you did, because there was a lot to do! But nevertheless, it was great that so many people were involved.
In all events there are one or two people that stand out as having played an absolutely crucial role. In this case, we would like to give special mention to Tony Thornley for creating the new map of Attermire and Guy Patterson for all his work developing relationships with the farmers and landowners and co-ordinating the whole weekend. And all this at the same time as he became a grandfather for the first time! We hope Carole his wife recognised him again when he finally went back home. Huge thanks also to Chris Burden, Tony Carlyle (and family) and Dave Shelley for the major roles they played in the success of the weekend.
The year began for us with Martyn picking up temporary charge (again) of Aire Affairs. He was very happy to hand it over again to Rosie and Jeff Mason, who have since taken the club magazine to new heights. Despite the recent problems with the printers, Jeff and Rosie have
